Journal - 14-Mar-2001, Wednesday, Mexico City, Mexico
(Trip: Ruta Maya, Southeast Mexico) The bags are packed once again as our intrepid couple embark on another adventure. Trying to learn from experience, we've discarded some non-essentials. I've also employed some smart, but probably meaningless, weight-saving tricks like shortening power cables and other such foolishness! The rough plan is to visit south-eastern Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Cuba. We've got till the end of April to do it, so hopefully we'll be able to take it a bit easy. Not having had time to plan, we buy bus tickets for Villahermosa, Tabasco - a place I've heard is a good starting point to explore the area. It's a 10 hour overnight bus journey, leaving at 20:30. At the bus station I employ an innovation learnt from the last trip: A cord between my bag and my pants. Let's see me leave my bag behind now! Waiting for the bus to leave, we look for something to snack on. Rummaging around in the big PVC bag we've come to use for food and sweaters, I come across an unrecognized plastic bag. Looking inside, I see a tea-towel. Strange. Moving the tea-towel aside, I see the wind chimes from our garden, metal spoons, and other household paraphernalia. Great. Looks like 'someone' forgot to put something into storage. Monica looks suitably astonished and guilty when I show her the wind chimes (and the tea-towel, and the spoons, and...). So much for reducing weight! Once on board the bus, I jokingly suggest we hang the wind chimes to make it more homely. The bus is pretty comfortable. As we move off an 'infommercial' for the bus company plays on the TV. The production quality of the commercial is impressive - most airlines could learn from it! Apparently our bus will be monitored by satellite. I wonder if it's true.
