Journal - 01-Mar-2001, Thursday, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico
(Trip: Baja California, Whale Watching, Copper Canyon.) Waking around 06:00 we rise to shower and arrange our stuff before the ferry's expected arrival to Topolobampo, Sinaloa. Remarkably the shower curtain on this ferry doesn't blow inwards. Cool. The water is a couple of grades warmer too; just right in fact. We dock around 08:30. An old bus takes us the 20km from Topolobampo to Los Mochis, the nearest city and the boarding point for the Copper Canyon train. Only standing, or rather crouching, room is available on the bus. Luggage goes on the roof. At first sight Los Mochis doesn't appear to have much to recommend it. At least that means it will probably be cheaper than the touristy places we've been frequenting. While waiting for a taxi, a women befriends us and advises us on a cheap hotel and that it's not possible to buy train tickets in advance, as we were planning. The taxi driver recommends another hotel, 'Del Valle', which he says is the same price but better (which probably means his brother is the owner, or something!). Sharing the taxi with the women, we check out the taxi driver's recommendation. $19, private bathroom. Luxury by our recent standards. We take it. Dumping our bags, we hit the streets. A cooked breakfast, and a little shopping, later, we return to our room. I set up my laptop to finish organizing the photos and to burn some back-up CD's. The weather is a bit bleak and I'm feeling a little tired. Although there are apparently some botanic gardens close by, we content ourselves with staying in our room, chilling out, and watching satellite TV. Meals consist of supermarket snacks. The train leaves at 06:00 tomorrow, so an early night is in order. Unfortunately it doesn't work out and by the time we turn out the light it's past 23:00.
